Continuous improvement derives from techniques in lean principles. It aids by streamlining workflow thus advancing productivity in maintenance. There are 3 common techniques of continuous improvement which are Kaizen, Six Sigma and Gemba.

  • Kaizen: Japanese philosophy focusing on involving all employees to contribute ideas for quality improvement.
  • Six Sigma: Statistical concept of achieving less than 3.4 defects per million opportunities. It follows a problem-solving process known as DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) in order to achieve operational excellence.
  • Gemba: Japanese terminology meaning ‘the real place’ which refers to the location where products are made, often the factory floor. It involves walking around where operations are taking place in order to identify opportunities for improvements.
